Why Your Running Belt Bounces (and 7 Fixes)

A runner in profile wearing a slim black running belt sitting snug on the hips.

Why does a running belt bounce?

Three things cause most of it:

  • Wrong spot. On the soft tissue at your waist, the belt moves with every stride.
  • Wrong tension. Too loose and it slides. Too tight and it creeps upward.
  • Uneven load. A heavy item on one side pulls the belt into a diagonal rock.

Sweat also reduces friction between belt and shirt, so a belt that felt fine in your living room can start to slide mid-run.

1. Move it lower

Aim for just above your hip bones, where your pelvis gives the belt a firm base.

2. Snug it up

You should be able to fit a finger under it, but it should not shift when you twist.

3. Pack the middle

Put the phone or heaviest item at the centre of your body, not at one side.

4. Pack less

A lightly filled pocket moves less. Carry the essentials and leave the rest at home. Not sure what counts? Here is what to carry on a run.

5. Wear it under a loose top

Fabric over the belt adds a little extra hold.

6. Try it over a snug base layer or bare skin

Slippery technical fabric makes belts slide.

7. Do the 2-minute test

Jog on the spot with your real load before heading out.

Still bouncing?

Check the pocket. A pocket that is too large for what is inside lets items shift. A stretchy pocket that hugs your phone holds it still. If it is also uncomfortable, see what to do when a running belt digs in.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a running belt sit?

Low on the waist, resting just above the hip bones.

Should a running belt be tight?

Snug, not tight. It should not move when you twist, but you should breathe comfortably.

Does what I pack matter?

Yes. Centre the heaviest item and avoid loading one side.
